Monsoon vs Winter: What to Pack for the Nilgiris

4 min read · 15 Jul 2026 · Ooty Nigel Travels Desk

Monsoon (June-September) means the hills at their greenest, waterfalls at full force, and rain that can arrive with almost no warning. Pack a proper waterproof shell rather than an umbrella (the wind on open viewpoints makes umbrellas useless), quick-dry layers, and grippy footwear — the ghat roads and forest trails get slick fast.

Winter (December-February) is a different packing list entirely: early mornings can dip close to freezing, especially around Avalanche and Doddabetta, so a proper insulated jacket and a warm layer for the car earn their space. Either season, keep a dry bag for your camera — one unexpected shower is all it takes.
