Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the tourist places in Tamil Nadu. You can visit this place to experience the wild life and exotic flora and fauna. You can also trek in a few areas in this reserve. Many endangered species are  reside in this reserve. It is on the border of Karnataka and Kerala and shares its importance with the other wild life sanctuaries in the nearby locations. You will find more than 200 species of birds, 34 species of reptiles, and many other animals and birds in this wild life sanctuary. Mudumalai is popular for sightseeing and wild life tours. You can get the best of scenic view when you walk by the streams, rivers, waterfalls, and take a stroll in the deep valleys.

Madumalai National Park

It was established way back in 1940 and was the first national park of Southern India. You can expect to see a variety of animals here including tigers, leopards, striped hyenas, dholes, sloth bears, Asian elephants, and Golden Jackals.

The crested hawk-eagle, the crested serpent eagle, the Malabar Trojan, and the Malabar grey hornbill are also spotter here and hence many bord watchers flock to Mudumalai National Park.

Recently declared as a tiger reserve, this wildlife sanctuary is situated on the banks of River Moyar, and on the north-western side of the Nilgiri hills. Home to the huge herds of elephants for which it is famous, tigers, leopards, gaurs, hyenas, sloth bears, sambars, mouse deer and wild animals are also seen here. Various reptiles like crocodiles, pythons, turtles etc are found here. This park is known for its avian population, consisiting of resident as well as migratory birds like hawk eagles, scops owls, brown dove, black woodpecker, king vultures, falcons etc. Tropical evergreen forests are maintained here, along with mosit mixed deciduous, dry teak and grasslands.

The Jungle Safari

A wonderful opportunity to see the wild up close and personal. The safari allows visitors to view various animals in their natural habitat. The safari can be on a jeep or a van.

There is only one jeep which accommodates 6 people and can be caught only on first come first serve basis. The vans run regularly. Another option is the elephant safari which is another experience all together. The elephants tramp on to the area which are unaccesible to normal vehicles.

Theppakadu Elephant Camp

Even though similar activities were carried out in this are since 1910 or even before, the ‘camp’ was officially established in 1972! The camp provides visitors with the wonderful experience of interacting with the elephants – bathing them, feeding them, etc.

The camp houses well trained elephants and hence there is minimum risk attached.
