HEAVY RAINS IN THE NILGIRIS..(article in today’s The New Indian Express)CM INSTRUCTS REMEDIAL MEASURES IN THE NILGIRISP S SUNDAR @ CoonoorThe Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy has enquired from The Nilgiris Collector Innocent Divya about the situation prevailing in the district due to the incessant rains.Disclosing this, the Collector said on Thursday that the CM gathered the information over phone and advised the Collector to inspect the affected areas and undertake necessary relief works. Following this, the Monitoring Officer for The Nilgiris Supriya Sahu and the Collector along with the officials visited the people accommodated in the flood relief camps in Kundah Bridge, Kanneri Manthanai and Emerald. They enquired from the inmates of their requirements and distributed relief materials to them. They also inspected the places affected by the floods and took necessary action on the remedial measures. Supriya Sahu said that meteorological department has forecast of heavy rain in The Nilgiris on August 8 and hence necessary precautionary measures have been put into operation. She said that by now, nearly 900 persons have been accommodated in various relief camps. In particular, those living in low lying areas have been shifted to the camps. In such centres, 25 camps have been kept ready, she said. The Collector added that trees fallen on power lines and roads are being removed by disaster management team and fire and rescue personnel. She asked people not to get panicky but to stay indoors. Late in the evening, reports have come in of a landslide in Emerald whereby large areas of meadows have been washed off by flash floods. The Nilgiris district received 3223.4 mm rainfall for the 24 hours ending 6.30 am on Thursday. Avalanche received a massive rainfall of 581 mm, while Gudalur received 335 mm and Upper Bhavani 319 mm. Naduvattam got 226 mm, Devala 220 mm and Glenmorghan 212. Several areas suffered from prolonged power cut as trees had fallen on overhead power wires.
