UDHAGAMANDALAM: Heavy rain has once again thrown the life out of gear in the hill retreat. While boulders fell on roads at some places, brining traffic to a grinding halt, it was landslip that disrupted normalcy at other places.

For more than a month, most parts of the district have been receiving moderate to heavy rain. The extended south-west monsoon had also robbed Ooty of the autumn season, which is also the second tourist season (September-October), this year.

On Wednesday, a tiled house collapsed near Rohini Theatre in Ooty due to heavy rainfall. Basuvaiya, 81, was injured in the incident and he is being treated at the Ooty government headquarters hospital.

Collector J Innocent Divya, meanwhile, declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Ooty, Coonoor, Kundha and Kotagiri taluks on Thursday in view of the severity of rain in those four taluks.
She said the disaster management machinery was in place in the district to tackle any eventuality arising out of incessant rain.
